Lesson 21: Pronouns
4th Grade English Grammar: Pronouns
Hi Kidus!
Today, we’re going to learn about something that helps make our sentences clearer and less repetitive. Can you guess what it might be? Great guesses! Today, we’ll learn about pronouns.
What is a Pronoun?
A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun in a sentence. This helps us avoid repeating the same words over and over.
Examples:
- Subject Pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they
- Object Pronouns: me, you, him, her, it, us, them
- Possessive Pronouns: mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs
For example, instead of saying, ‘Lisa went to Lisa’s room because Lisa was tired,’ we can say, ‘Lisa went to her room because she was tired.’ See how pronouns make our sentences smoother?
Why Use Pronouns?
Pronouns help us avoid repeating the same nouns and make our speaking and writing clearer.
Example:
- Without Pronoun: Tom loves Tom’s new bike.
- With Pronoun: Tom loves his new bike.
Which sentence sounds better to you? Yes, the one with pronouns! It sounds smoother and less repetitive.
Pronoun Agreement
Now, let’s talk about pronoun agreement. This means that the pronoun we use must agree with the noun it’s replacing in two important ways: number and gender.
- Number: Whether the noun is singular (one) or plural (more than one).
- Gender: Whether the noun is male, female, or neutral.
1. Number Agreement:
- Singular Nouns: Use singular pronouns.
- Example: The girl said she is happy.
- Plural Nouns: Use plural pronouns.
- Example: The boys said they are excited.
2. Gender Agreement:
- Male Nouns: Use he/him/his.
- Example: John brought his book.
- Female Nouns: Use she/her/hers.
- Example: Mary brought her book.
- Neutral Nouns/Objects: Use it/its.
- Example: The dog wagged its tail.
